Description:
When we first looked at this car (which was a new car trade-in at Palm
Toyota in Fort Myers, Florida) we thought "OK, this is clearly a
surgeon's vehicle that was dealer maintained and garage kept for the
last twenty years." It's just that easy on the eyes, and a resounding
pleasure to drive. We can't actually vouch for the doctor or prove that
it was garage kept, but feel confident saying that's the impression
you'll get when you see it up close. It's as clean and nice as it
appears to be in the photos.
Having driven a good number of Mercedes diesels, this one offered
startling performance - the word "fast" was actually used on our test
drive, something virtually unheard of when describing this breed. The
blow-by from the motor is downright minimal, and it's apparent that an
almost obsessive maintenance schedule was followed for this machine. The
oil pressure pegs right away and the engine temperature remains in
optimal range at highway speeds or idling. The turbo provides excellent
boost, and the transmission shifts just as it did in 1982. The brakes
are strong and have been recently refreshed, and the glow plugs warm the
engine up for starting almost instantly. The vacuum system is working
exactly as it should, and it produces a smooth idle with a friendly
diesel clatter at any engine temperature. It rolls down the road at
80mph solid and straight, and handles corners and bumps with ease and
stability. This car needs absolutely nothing mechanically.
The cosmetics are an equally good story. The body and underneath are
visibly free from corrosion, with absolutely none to be seen in the
usual spots around the windshield, wheel wells or in the trunk. There
are very few dings or marks of any kind, and the paint appears to be
original and in extremely good condition. It waxes up beautifully. The
radial tires are in excellent shape, with 80% of their tread left on
them. The metal trim has slight clouding from sun rays but remains
excellent overall.
Inside is stunning, and in a rare condition. The seats and trim are
virtually untouched by wear or sun, and there is no fading, rips or
tears to be found. The carpet has not noticeably faded, and the wood is
in excellent condition, with only one crack in the finish near the
center console shifter. The seats adjust smoothly and easily, the
original floor mats are in place, and the headliner and visors are tight
and near perfect. This interior has been very much unmolested.
This fine W123 model is not short on options, with power central locking
(including gas door and trunk), power windows, power locks, cruise
control, engine tachometer, intermittent wipers, amber driving lights,
alloy wheels, full size spare, and an aftermarket CD player. The power
steering is light and perfect with the proper amount of driver
feedback. The air conditioning blows cold and heat works just as it
should.
If you're looking for a 300D that needs nothing to be an upstanding
daily driver, this is very much the one you want. It's a genuine treat
to drive, was extremely well maintained, and could deliver more than
300,000 additional miles if continued on a proper maintenance schedule.
We would feel confident driving this car to Alaska.
