Description:
Offered for
sale is the quintessential Volvo 240 Sedan, in Arctic White with a
tan cloth interior. In every way, this Florida car is the
machine Volvos were meant to be - it's safe, simple to own and
operate, reliable, attractively solid, and very, very friendly. This
is an endearing car to observe and operate.
Cosmetically, the car is in
exceptional condition for its age. The paint shines very well
and takes a wax nicely, the body panels are straight and true, and
the inside is clean and free from any major detractions. There
are the usual dings and chips here and there, but they're quite
limited and in far fewer frequency than you would expect from a car
of this vintage. Corrosion on the body is very limited, and
there is none underneath or on the floor pans. Some mild
corrosion is visible on the very bottom of the left rear fender
well, and a small spot or two in the driver's door jamb. Being a
Florida car from day one (delivered at The Collection in Ft.
Lauderdale), it was not subjected to salty roads or winter driving.
The styled steel wheels with chrome
trim rings are simply beautiful, and reminiscent of a 60s design
that pleases the eye. A light gold pinstripe runs the length
of the car, around the rear deck, and appears very tasteful. The
chrome and aluminum trim is in good shape, and the grill and lights
are all intact and in far better condition than most. There is a
small piece of aluminum trim missing from the bottom of the right
rear window frame. The weather stripping is all soft, seals well,
and free from tears, and the hood, trunk and doors all close solidly
with a European "thud." Original Volvo mud flaps are a useful
and attractive touch.
Inside is very clean overall, with
tan cloth seats and matching carpet. The dashboard has a few
sun cracks and some fading on the very top, but it looks good
overall, and the cracks are not noticeably detracting. The
carpet is clean, complete and free from rips or wear holes, but does
have some fading from age. The seats are in good shape, with only a
very mild tear on a seam in the driver's seat bottom - it's not
particularly bad, and does not show poorly enough to be an issue.
The foam on the driver's seat has been flattened a little on the
seat back, but they both look very presentable overall, and the
adjustments (including lumbar, recline and horizontal position) are
smooth and easy. The electrical all works well, and the gauges
come to life without hesitation. The turn signals and wipers have no
errant behavior, and the climate control works well, with cold AC
(professionally converted to the modern and more environmentally
friendly R-134) and substantial heat. The glove box is solid and has no sagging or
looseness. The visor clips have broken, but this is quite common
with these cars, and they are easy and inexpensive to replace. Four
Pioneer speakers have replaced the factory ones in the proper
locations, and an aftermarket AM/FM cassette player is in the
dashboard and works great. The door handles, windows, mirror
adjusts, and power central locking all work well, and the back glass has an electric defrost.
Mechanically, this Volvo is
in very good condition, with low miles for this breed. The
four-cylinder fuel injected fires right to life and idles smoothly,
with no erroneous noises from the compressor, power steering or
alternator. The charging system is strong, and a fresh battery stays
at full charge and provides lots of cranking power. Fresh belts and
hoses have been installed, and our ASE Certified Master Mechanic has
just installed a new timing belt, making this ready for a long trip
anywhere. The engine temperature remains as it should when idling,
in traffic, or at highway speeds.
A new master cylinder has been
installed, and the brakes are strong and smooth, stopping the car
confidently with no noises or shudders. The transmission and clutch
are in good shape, and the car shifts with a legendary Volvo feel.
The all-season Firestone radial tires are in good shape with more
than half the tread left on them. The electrically activated
overdrive works as it should, and the steering is tight and smooth
with no play in the wheel. If properly maintained, this
Volvo could go another 200,000 miles or more without requiring any
substantial servicing. This breed is renowned for its
longevity, and this particular car has been well maintained since
new, according to all the pertinent signs of mechanical health.
There is no engine sludge, and nothing was left neglected or in
serious disrepair when we acquired it. The finished trunk is in very
good shape, and a spare tire and jack are stowed in the proper
location.
All in all, this is a particularly
clean example of a legendary sedan, with the perfect trim package
for a classic Volvo feel. It's short on frills, but does
deliver a well engineered feel, an unparalleled safety and
dependability record, and a very friendly feeling to own and
operate. This is the classic Volvo 240 ordered in just the way
it's meant to be - safe, simple and solid.
