Description:
Offered for sale is
an attractive example of the sporty and popular 3 series BMW convertible, in
Guards red with gray leather interior. While not in excellent cosmetic
condition, it does look good, feels very solid, and drives perfectly. Top up
or top down, this machine is a lot of fun to drive and gets appreciative
looks. Being an "i" model, this has the high performance engine and a 3.73
limited slip rear end - it's a very quick car.
Mechanically, this
BMW couldn't be any better. It fires right up and idles smoothly, and
provides enough power to give most cars on the road a run for their money -
it feels fast. The transmission shifts perfectly at any rate of
acceleration, and the steering feels responsive and accurate. The brakes
are strong and true, and the suspension has no play or harshness - it takes
corners very well. The radial tires have about half of their life left on
them, and should go another 20,000 - 30,000 miles. The AC is very cold, and
the charging system operates well, keeping the car in ready condition. There
is no apparent rust on this car, either on the sheet metal or underneath -
it does not appear to have weathered any harsh winters.
Cosmetically, this
BMW is in good/fair condition. The paint is mostly shiny and attractive,
but the clear coat is sun faded in some places, and the left side has faded
to a slightly different shade towards the rear. It's not offensive to look
at, but would require a paint job to return to 100%. The trim and glass are
complete and clean, and the attractive kidney grill and fog lamps look
great. The wheels are chrome dipped, but show some flaking of the plating
around the edges. Despite its cosmetic flaws on the outside, this
convertible is very sharp from a reasonable distance and shows very well (as
evidenced by the photos). The top is clean, intact and operates smoothly,
disappearing completely beneath a hard cover when lowered, giving the car a
very smooth look.
Inside, the car
looks good overall, with gray leather seats and attractive black trim. The
dashboard is in very good condition, with no fading or cracking from the
sun. The wheel looks beautiful and has only some mild scuffs around the
comfortable leather grip. The 10-way adjustable seats do show some fading
and cracking of the leather, but are mostly free from tears and extremely
supportive and adjustable. A seam split on the right seat was properly
repaired with heavy duty thread and does not obviously detract from
appearance. The door panels are clean and free from any rips or cracks, and
the carpet is clean and complete with no soiling or tears. The low profile
shifter and logically laid-out controls give this car a very solid and
European feel. An Alpine cassette deck is in the dashboard, controlling a
6-disc CD changer under the right front seat. These work well, and play
through a set of JL Audio speakers that sound extremely good. The power
antenna works properly, as do the power windows, power central locking,
cruise control, and power mirrors. Being a BMW, this car is not short on
options.
The tachometer,
speedometer, and full gauges and lights work as they should. There is a trim
piece missing from the area above the rear-view mirror, but this will be
easy to find and replace. There is owner's documentation and manuals
included. A couple of small tears in the roof (under 1") have been repaired
with silicone sealer, and the glove box latch was broken and is now held by
subtle screws in the corners. A small piece of cosmetic trim is missing from
the left side of the cover, but it's not integral and makes no difference in
the operation.
If you are looking
to affordably get in to one of these attractive and desirable cars, this is
a perfect candidate. It's got some cosmetic flaws, but still looks very good
overall, and aced our mechanic's inspection with flying colors. Properly
maintained, this BMW could provide another 200,000 miles of reliable and
sporty driving. It's a lot of fun to drive even before you put the top down
- and a blast after that.
